Good Friday

What is Good Friday?

The reason we are gathered this evening is not because this is a holy day that we are obligated to observe. God has graciously given us the weekly Lord’s Day as a day set apart to rest from our labors, worship Christ, and hope in His resurrection.

We gather because it is good and appropriate for us to give intentional time to reflect with humble hearts on the death of our Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross for sinners like us.

Welcome

Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Wretched (Trinity Hymnal #472)

Confession of Sin

Heavenly Father, You are wise and holy, and all Your judgments are just. We humble ourselves today under Your mighty hand, confessing that we are a proud and hypocritical people. Like the Pharisees, we love to project the external appearance of righteousness, while inwardly we are ravenous wolves. We are satisfied when the outside of our cup is clean, yet care nothing for the approval of our Sovereign Creator who alone is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We confess our hypocrisy as sin and repent of it. For the sake of Your dear Son who suffered and died so that we might have life, cleanse us from all ungodliness and deceit, grant us truth in our inmost being, and help us from now on to walk in the honesty and humility of a renewed life. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

What is the Chief End of Man?

Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

Read the Westminster Shorter Catechism

What Is My Only Comfort in Life and Death?

That I am not my own, but belong–body and soul, in life and in death–to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.
