Morning Worship

Silent Prayer and Apostolic Greeting

1 Corinthians 1:3

Call to Worship

Psalm 135:1-4

Hymn of Adoration

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Trinity Hymnal #345)

Confession of Sin

Gracious God, we confess that we have longed too much for the comforts of this world. We have loved the gifts more than the giver. In your mercy, help us to see that all the things we pine for are shadows, but you are substance; that they are quicksands, but you are mountain; that they are shifting, but you are anchor. We plead your forgiveness on the merits of Jesus Christ. Accept his worthiness for our unworthiness, his sinlessness for our transgressions, his fullness for our emptiness, his glory for our shame, his righteousness for our dead works, his death for our life. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Isaiah 44:21-23

Confession of Faith

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets; and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and of the life of the world to come. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father
And to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning
Is now and ever shall be
World without end, Amen.

Prayer of Supplication & Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Silent Prayer and Apostolic Greeting

1 Corinthians 1:3

Call to Worship

Psalm 105:1-6

Hymn of Adoration

O Worship the King (Based on Psalm 104) (Trinity Hymnal #3)

Confession of Sin

God of all grace, we are weak and forgetful people, easily distracted by the joys and sorrows of our lives. We are capable of great thoughts concerning you one moment, yet we forget your kindness and live as though we had no hope the next. Forgive us, Father, for the unbelief that clings to our sinful flesh and clouds our minds with doubt and fear. May Christ’s death comfort us, for we have been loved with unfathomable love. May his resurrection assure us that his obedience was perfect, his sacrifice accepted, and his work finished. Help us hold fast to the gospel we have believed: to cherish it in our weakness and to profess its power when we stand strong. Deepen our faith and guard our hearts and minds with the helmet of Christ’s salvation, the breastplate of his righteousness, the shield of his faith, the sandals of his peace, and the sword of his truth. In his strong name we pray, Amen.

Psalm 96:1-6

Hymn of Adoration

Come, Thou Almighty King (Trinity Hymnal #101)

Confession of Sin

Sovereign Lord, We are harassed by doubts, fears, and unbelief, yet we choose to live in spiritual darkness. Our hearts are full of sinful thoughts and worries, and we cannot create faith in ourselves at all. When we feel that you are absent, we sink into distress and are tempted to many kinds of sin. We lie to protect ourselves, because we do not trust you with our safety, welfare, and reputation. We lie boastfully about ourselves, because we do not trust you to give us the glory that we so crave. We lie to impress people because we fear that you do not love us, so we look to the love and praise of others instead. We lie to escape the consequences of our sin. Father, forgive us for the many ways in which we lie to other, and forgive us for the deep idolatries behind those lies. Give us a confidence in you that is so bold that we will move powerfully toward one another in honesty and love. Amen.

To God Be the Glory (Trinity Hymnal #55)

Confession of Sin

Mighty God, You are good beyond measure while I am shaped by sin. My lips are ready to confess, but my heart is slow to feel, and my ways slower to change. I bring my soul to You: break it, wound it, bend it, mold it. Show me sin’s deformity, that I may hate and flee from it. My abilities have been weapons against You. I have misused my strengths and labored against Your kingdom. Give me grace to mourn my foolishness. Grant me to know that the way of the sinner is hard, that to depart from You is to lose all good. I have seen Your perfect law, the happiness of those who embrace it, and the dignified walk to which it calls; yet I daily violate and despise it. Your Spirit strives within me, yet I provoke Him to abandon me. For these sins I cry pardon. Work in me profound and abiding repentance. Give me the fullness of a godly grief. Grant that through true repentance I may see more clearly the brightness and glories of the saving cross.

What is the Chief End of Man?

Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

Read the Westminster Shorter Catechism

What Is My Only Comfort in Life and Death?

That I am not my own, but belong–body and soul, in life and in death–to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.
