Lord’s Day Worship – March 22, 2020

March 21, 2020 by Pastor Micah

Morning Worship

Call to Worship

Psalm 95:1-5

Hymn of Adoration

Rejoice the Lord is King(Trinity Hymnal #310)

Confession of Sin

Heavenly Father, You are our great King. We are eager to declare our willingness to go where you command and follow wherever you lead. Yet we confess that we are very weak and fickle. We are easily distracted, constantly diverted from your ways, and quick to follow our own sinful hearts instead. Teach us what it means to take up our cross daily and follow you. Help us put to death our overwhelming desires to control our own lives in the present and future. Fill us with such a burning passion for your glory that we will suffer any loss, ridicule, inconvenience, or cost, in order to hear your name praised in every land. Change our selfish hearts. Enlarge them with a love and gratitude toward you so immense and powerful that following you will be our greatest joy and delight. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Ephesians 2:1-10

Confession of Faith

Heidelberg Catechism #1-2

Q1. What is your only comfort in life and death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.

Q2. What do you need to know in order to live and die in the joy of this comfort?

A. First, how great my sins and misery are; second, how I am delivered from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to be thankful to God for such deliverance.

Psalm 145:17-21

Hymn of Adoration

Holy, Holy, Holy (Trinity Hymnal #100)

Confession of Sin

Sovereign Lord, We are harassed by doubts, fears, and unbelief, yet we choose to live in spiritual darkness. Our hearts are full of sinful thoughts and worries, and we cannot create faith in ourselves at all. When we feel that you are absent, we sink into distress and are tempted to many kinds of sin. We lie to protect ourselves, because we do not trust you with our safety, welfare, and reputation. We lie boastfully about ourselves, because we do not trust you to give us the glory that we so crave. We lie to impress people because we fear that you do not love us, so we look to the love and praise of others instead. We lie to escape the consequences of our sin. Father, forgive us for the many ways in which we lie to each other, and forgive us for the deep idolatries behind those lies. Give us a confidence in you that is so bold that we will move powerfully toward one another in honesty and love. Amen.

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Trinity Hymnal #345)

Confession of Sin

Almighty God, we acknowledge and confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; we have not loved you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. Deepen within us our sorrow for the wrong we have done, and the good we have left undone. Lord, you are full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy; there is always forgiveness with you! Restore to us the joy of your salvation; bind up that which is broken, give light to our minds, strength to our wills, and rest to our souls. Speak to each of us, and let your word abide with us until it has wrought in us your holy will. Amen.

Hymn of Adoration

O Worship the King (Trinity Hymnal #2)

Confession of Sin

Mighty God, You are our deliver and our refuge from danger. We know we have nothing to fear in life or in death, yet we do fear. You have told us to rest from our own striving, yet we often rely on our own strength and find ourselves consumed with anxiety and deeply shaken by this world and by our own weakness. You have promised to work all things in this universe together for our spiritual blessing and good, yet we doubt your love and argue with your wisdom. Lord, thank you that in the midst of our faltering belief, you have provided a strong and power full Savior. Though Satan’s accusations ring in our ears and threatens to undo us, you have declared us righteous and blameless in your sight because of Christ. Silence our mouths when we condemn ourselves, and settle our frightened souls when we tremble with fear before you. Persuade us day after day that you are always on our side, even when we grieve you by a thousand falls. Show us how your wrath toward our sin has been emptied on your precious Son, and let us feel deeply in our souls that Jesus has paid for every sin with his bleeding wounds. Amen.

What Is My Only Comfort in Life and Death?

That I am not my own, but belong–body and soul, in life and in death–to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.

He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.

Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.
